In addition to the adults supporting Scouting at 32nd, there are also Young Leaders. Young Leaders are aged 14 to 18 and are Explorer Scouts.
Explorer Scouts is the next section after the Scout section. Explorer Scout Units are run by our local Scout District; Brunel. There is no Unit based at 32nd, but many of those reaching Explorer age have joined Fromeside Explorer Scout Unit.
All the young people aged 14 to 18 supporting the sections at 32nd are formally members of the Brunel District Young Leader Explorer Scout Unit. Unlike ‘ordinary’ Explorer Scout Units the “YL Unit” doesn’t meet on a regular basis. The YLs can also join another Explorer Scout Unit if they want (i.e. Fromeside Explorer Scout Unit).
There is a formal training programme to support Young Leaders with working with the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, and to help them with supporting the adult leaders. The “YLs” training scheme is run by the local ‘Brunel Scout District’ and is supported by Philip Bird, our Group Scout Leader.
The current YLs at 32nd have formerly been Scouts at our Group. There is also the opportunity for young people aged 14 to 18 from outside of Scouting to become a Young Leader at 32nd – contact us for details. Many of the adults currently supporting Scouting at 32nd took on their adult roles after being a Young Leader with us.
The Scout Association has produced a great programme explaining all about the Young Leader scheme – video in addition to the introductory video below:
